“Hidden Figures” is poised to take the box office’s top spot
this weekend. The historical piece about three African-American women and their
contribution to the space race took in over $20 million dollars from Friday to
Sunday and looks to end the MLK weekend with $25 million in ticket sales.
Octavia Spencer, who was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in
the film, bought out the Baldwin Hills movie theater in Los Angeles to provide
a screening for the film for low-income families.
During last week’s Golden Globe Awards ceremony, many were
mashing up the titles of “Hidden Figures” and “Fences” much to the chagrin of
Black Twitter. The #HiddenFences hashtag has led to some creative mashups that
playfully mock the slip made at the ceremony. Some tweets took a more serious
tone and see the mistake as a reflection of the lack of care or knowledge of
African-American cinematic achievements.
Most of the other movies out this weekend bombed, with the
exception of a surprise performance from the movie “The Bye Bye Man” which
exceeded expectations. Of course, “Rogue One,” a Star Wars movie continued to
perform and has taken the film’s gross beyond $980 million. “Fences” dropped
out of the top 10, but takes it gross to over $45 million.
